Talking to AI: Your First Prompts
Learn how to write effective prompts that get you better results. Simple techniques anyone can use right away.
The #1 Rule of Talking to AI
Be specific. The biggest mistake people make is being too vague.
Compare these two prompts:
| Vague ❌ | Specific ✅ |
|---|---|
| “Help me with an email" | "Write a polite email to my landlord asking for a 2-week extension on rent payment. Keep it under 100 words." |
| "Tell me about health" | "Give me 5 simple breakfast ideas for someone trying to eat less sugar. Include prep time.” |
The more detail you give, the better the response.
The Magic Formula
Great prompts usually have three parts:
- Role: Tell the AI who to be → “You are a friendly fitness coach”
- Task: What you want → “Create a 15-minute morning workout”
- Details: Specifics → “for a beginner, no equipment needed, include warm-up”
Put together: “You are a friendly fitness coach. Create a 15-minute morning workout for a beginner with no equipment. Include a warm-up and cool-down.”
Give Examples
If you want a specific style or format, show the AI an example:
“Write product descriptions like this example: ‘The Cloud Sneaker — Lightweight comfort meets street style. Memory foam insole. Breathable mesh. Your feet will thank you.’ Now write one for a waterproof hiking boot.”
Iterate and Refine
Don’t expect perfection on the first try. Prompting is a conversation:
- “Make it shorter”
- “Use a more professional tone”
- “Add bullet points instead of paragraphs”
- “Give me 3 different versions”
Each refinement gets you closer to what you actually want.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Being too vague: “Write something good” → about what?
- Asking too many things at once: Break complex requests into steps
- Not giving context: AI doesn’t know your situation unless you explain it
- Accepting the first response: Always refine — the second try is usually better
Try it now: Open any AI chatbot and try the magic formula. Give it a role, a task, and some details. Notice how much better the response is compared to a vague prompt.
